Arcachon (Arcaishon in Occitan) is a commune in the Gironde department in south-western France. It is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 kilometres (34 mi) southwest of Bordeaux in the Landes forest. It has a fine beach, and a mild climate said to be favourable for invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints.

Arcachon is known for the “Arcachonnaise”, the local name for an Arcachon villa, which is the architectural style of many of the older houses built there. It is a type of Victorian architecture, and was criticized for generations, but is now considered to be charming and deeply human.

The town of Arcachon is only 150 years old. Not long before 2 May 1857, when Emperor Napoleon III signed its official “birth certificate”, it was just a forest of pine trees, oaks and strawberry trees (arbutus), with no road links, and home – mostly when the weather was expected to be warm, and more in wood huts than in real houses – to fewer than 400 people, mostly fishermen and peasants. In earlier years, when some hygienists began to recommend sea bathing, three sea establishments were laid out by some entrepreneurs especially for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie and other wealthy people. This was the beginning of a new lifestyle, and some of the locals got the opportunity to claim their independence from La Teste-de-Buch, which owned their properties, in order to found a “free” new town, Arcachon.

At its southern entrance from the Atlantic ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by Europe’s largest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla (or du Pilat), nearly 3 kilometres long, 500 metres wide, reaching 107 metres in height, and moving inland at rate of 5 metres a year.

The area is served by Bordeaux Merignac Airport and the TGV Atlantique.

Last time I found some brochures of my work 10 years before! Amazing. I know a lot of designers and also HR people will “recommend” to show always the latest works… Well they don’t know What is design…

Design is alive. And when it’s on the web, it’s double alive! It has his own “life”, and will grow without you, everywhere, anywhere; people will copy it, transform it, keep it for reference, use it. Design is alive and it’s good. Good to keep a trace of what you have done too. Because there is always a before and an after, it’s (at least for me) always interesting to see evolution of trends. It’s culture, design culture. 10 years before in France color trends was this kind of Orange, almost fluorescent one. People was also using a lot Pantone metallic ink. That’s very funny. And funnier is to see how all this design is a kind of outdated. So what is the recipe of eternal design then? What made the success of Gutenberg in 1455…? What about the Bauhaus?
Well, I don’t have all the answers… But one idea is that simplicity is one of the key… Minimalistic design. It’s like cars in a movie, you can guess easily which time a movie has been shoot in looking for the cars in it; more difficult if you DON’T have any car right? Same for design… If you want your design to be kind of “famousForEver”, use a minimum of elements. “Intemporel“. No flashy colors, no fancy fonts! Use Helvetica Neue, (love it) or Swiss 721 Thin font, forget Comic Sans.

I will try to follow this advice… ; )

Dear recruiter, headhunter, HR,

I’d like you to help me to understand how you work…

  • …as I don’t understand:  why, despite companies and clients say I’m very creative, I can’t manage to have any appointments in your offices and meet any clients?

  • Why when I finally got one that it’s only “one shot”? (means I was enough good for ONE company but not for any others?)
    Why sometimes the recruiter interviewing me doesn’t understand what exactly my job is? (“oh you are a multimedia designer?”)
  • I have some questions to ask you and it will be great if you could answer!
